Sustainable Melbourne Alliance for Transport and Urbanism

Sustainable transport in the news

crowded train I had about 2 minutes on Jon Faine 774 ABC Melbourne on Wednesday morning  talking about how sustainable transport fared in the state budget and creating jobs by building transport infratructure- here's the audio file.

If you'd like to hear me talk about transport issues in more detail, here's a link to an episode of 3CR program The Gut Response, where I got to chat to my hearts content about transport and other things including climate change and the carbon pollution reduction scheme. It's the 25th March episode that you need, with the transport bit being in the second half of the show.

The media release the Sustainable Melbourne Alliance put out before the budget is here. It talks about investing in 'shovel ready' sustainable transport and planning projects in Tuesday's state budget - delivering jobs, economic stimulus and environmental benefits all at once.

I'm currently working part-time as Executive Officer for the Sustainable Melbourne Alliance for Transport and Urbanism. The Alliance is a partnership of organisations working for sustainable planning and urban form. It's auspiced by the GAMUT Centre at Melbourne University

I've been working on transport issues for well over a decade...

My experience includes:

  • Member, Advisory Board, Centre for Governance and Management of Urban Transport, University of Melbourne 2009
  • Convenor Australian Greens Victoria Transport and Planning Working Group 2009

  • Councillor for Saltwater Ward, City of Maribyrnong 2003 – 2008
  • Mayor City of Maribyrnong 2006.
  • Chair, Metropolitan Transport Forum 2004 -2008. The MTF brings together 19 municipalities and was a major influence on Victorian transport policy during this time. Under Janet’s leadership the MTF embarked on a major public transport advocacy campaign (see www.pt4me2.org.au).
  • Vice President, Victorian Local Governance Association 2006-2008.
  • Transport Campaigner for Colleen Hartland MP on the proposed East- West road link 2008
  • Awarded 2006 National Bicycling Achievement Award for contribution towards cycling by a politician
  • Recipient of MAV - McArthur Fellowship 2005-06. This award is given to one Councillor each year for overseas travel to research a topic of significance to local government. Janet travelled across North America and Northern Europe researching sustainable transport and planning and the role of community in achieving this.
  • Led City of Maribyrnong’s commitment to being carbon neutral by 2015
  • Active campaigner on freight issues including the impact of the Port of Melbourne and port related freight, including being a founding member of Maribyrnong Truck Action Group 2005 - present

  • Member No Freeways for West Footscray 2008 - present

I'm planning to link here to lots of the papers and presentations that I have written and presented over the years - but these things take time.

In the meantime, here are two:
